For many people and families, summertime is the season to vacation. While this can mean hopping on a plane to visit some distant locale, in many cases, it means hitting the U.S. roadways to embark on (and return from) a long journey.

These summer driving safety tips, as first published by the NHTSA, can help you and your family stay safe as you travel this summer.

If you or members of your family are planning a summertime road trip, make sure you are properly prepared by reviewing the summer driving safety tips discussed below. While these tips can reduce your risk of getting into car accidents as you vacation this summer, they may also help you protect your family and minimize the possible effects of collisions if one occurs during your summertime travels.

How to Stay Safe on the Roads This Summer

The following summer driving safety tips were first published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) prior to Memorial Day this year. As the NHTSA explains, part of staying safe on the roads this summer entails:

  • Buckling up – Every time you and others get into your car, make sure everyone buckles their seatbelts. While this tip is relevant throughout the year, it’s particularly important during the summertime when more drivers and vehicles are on the roadways.
  • Not driving drunk – Someone in the U.S. is killed in a drunk driving accident about every 51 minutes or so. While DUI accidents tend to increase during holidays (like July 4th), they also tend to be more prevalent during the summertime. Do your part to keep the roadways (and yourself!) safe by not getting behind the wheel after consuming alcohol.
  • Making sure kids are safe in and around your car – While this means that you should make sure that younger kids are properly secured in carseats while driving, it also means that you should:
    • Not leave children in vehicles unattended, especially during hot summer months
    • Be aware of when children may be near your vehicle and take the appropriate cautions to avoid hitting them
    • Teach your kids safety when it comes to crossing the roads.
  • Take care of your tires – The heat of summer can increase the risk of tire blowouts and tire failure. Therefore, you should make sure that your tires have the proper air pressure and sufficient tread before embarking on long summer road trips.
